Buying interest has been broad-based.

As of Jan. 25, 160 S&P 500 companies have reported earnings. 59% have beat expectations, 14% have been in-line, and 28% missed, according to Thomson Financial.

This is close to a typical quarter that sees 60% beat, 20% meet and 20% miss.

The financial sector has had the most dismal results, with the majority of companies missing estimates. Financials earnings are expected to drop 104% compared to last year.
