McCain is the one that can get votes from Democrats as well as independents. Varmint Mittney cannot. Mere regressive voters (and who knows how many WASP regressives will prefer to stay home rather than vote for a Mormon) will not win it for the GOP this time. They need crossover voters. And contrary to what you think, the Democrats would love the Republican candidate to be Varmintney. They know that many Democratic Party voters would switch if McCain was running.

Well, Varmintney has to beat McCain first! He has lost to McCain again, this time in FL. Looks like McCain will get more Democrat+Independent votes in the general elections than Regressive votes! That is why Democratic Party would rather run against Varmint than against McCain.
