but the trends from the 1920s to now show the dramatic reduction in proportion of income going to food. Yes that's what I was demonstrating.. for the US...

BTW 40K gross or net ? Dunno about the US but 40K gross in Toronto is not a lot of dough..

plus I'd say the numbers will be off because folks buy a lot of crap... what no Orville Redenboker ;o) not to mention your menu is incredibly boring after say a week... ;o) (reminds me of Astérix and Obélix visiting the British LOL)

When I was in China this summer one guy was telling me he has no time to go to the market like his parents do.. Most younger folks with good jobs he said ate out and used the western style supermarket .. costs more saves time.. I would bet that the US and Canadian numbers are likely a lot higher because of the non essential crap... whereas in the developing countries the figures are likely more accurate .. Just gut feel though...

We spend more than 10% likely because I like my smoked salmon, brie, better cuts of meat (eat a lot less nowadays though), Sea Bass and grouper routinely instead of only sole and cheaper tilapia... etc etc.. (we eat a lot of fish) We tend to save because we also eat a lot of meatless Chick Pea , Lentil dishes etc..

All told though the overall trend is down.. in the meanwhile though demographics still dictate more fertiliser requirements though I believe..

EDIT: I do a lot of food shopping in the Chinese supermarkets... they tend to have lots of bargains and always a special 'Cash Only' checkout line :O)
