The call surprised me. IMO, it was the wrong one. Today's Post has an op-ed about the extent to which Bush proved to be a "compassionate conservative." It identified several actions that can best be explained by a compassionate instinct on his part. While I disagreed with most of them, I can't begin to see how they are not compassionate. And there are enough of them to mitigate any perceived sadism to the point where that label cannot be aptly applied. washingtonpost.com
