The two - taxes and spending are really one.

I pretty much agree with that statement. It isn't perfectly and exactly true, but government spending, whether paid for by taxes or borrowing, imposes a cost on the economy, and means that government is getting to direct more and more of the nations wealth rather than individuals. Which is the main reason I think government should spend less.
