Our society destroyed the black culture and people, first with slavery and then with segregation and racism. Even in Califronia when I was working in a paper bag factory in Emoryville (mostly black) in the early 60's, they hired no blacks! When a society destroys a people that socieity owes a debt to help them get back 0n their feet. The conservatives have never uderstood or accepted our responibility to the African American. Evidence: they went to the south after the 1964 civil rights act and told them by code they would not enforce the ct any more than they needed. The soth has voted solid republican ever since; and knock down things like affirmitve action every chance they get. Very first thing jeb bush did when he beame gov of florida. And the right wing always brings out the Horatio Alger nonsense. My black friends have told me racism is so horrible a white person could never imagine how bad it is! We owe it to the African American community to help them get on their feet. We owe them!
