The issues where different then. Conservative/liberal to the extent it was a major political distinction at all, didn't mean the same thing it does today.

Still it seems off calling him a liberal. He wasn't exactly a classical liberal (he strengthened and centralized government), he certainly doesn't resemble modern liberals (the term has come to mean something very different in modern American politics than it does today so the classical/modern distinction in terms is important).

So what's your argument that Lincoln was a liberal?
