My family has only been here since 1962 ... you accept a little rudeness once in a while ... I have a couple of aunts who swallowed their wedding rings before they got here out of fear the rings would be confiscated ... my mom just left it behind ... they've been married 56 years ... imo if you cannot accept people being rude to you, then you are a touch too delicate ... the question isn't why the majority was being so rude to you ... it is why your own group wasn't being more supportive of you ... minority groups always have thrived in the U.S. ... but to thrive you have to support each other, and only each other.

I sure wouldn't think it was a vestige if it was me putting up with that. Probably depends on how old she is whether the glass seems half empty or 98% full. Not that I think she should have to suffer that. She shouldn't. But I remember my first trip south when old black men would step off the curb into the gutter rather than simply walk past me on the sidewalk. Made me cry. We should be delighted with what has been accomplished as we wait for the last vestiges to disappear as they will over the course of time. And try to not do anything to disrupt that process. One way to disrupt it, IMO, is to yell "rampant racism" over vestiges. Give her a hug. This, too, shall pass.
