I stand by the dictionary definition.

Which one? The meanings are different enough to be different words, in this case its the same word for very different concepts.

Most of those 15 examples explain liberal thinking very well.

You mean "progressive", or "liberal-Democrat" thinking? Than no they don't explain it very well, perhaps not even at all. A few are entirely irrelevant (for example no one in the US pushes monarchies), others are general platitudes that people of any political persuasion could have, others are circular (defining liberal as liberal), after taking those away about the only definition of liberal you only have two ideas left. One of them is a good definition for libertarian (and modern American liberals are NOT libertarian), the other is "progressive", which is just a different label for the same thing, not an explanation of it.

9. characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.
10. given freely or abundantly; generous: a liberal donation.

I wouldn't call giving away other people's money generous."

As for the south shifting to the Republicans, that might have a lot to do with other issues. When people like McGovern started to gain prominence in the Democratic party, it turned off a lot of people in the South (and also certain groups outside the south, many of whom later came to be called "Reagan Democrats"
