I think the real problem was that the liberals owned the Congress back then. Maybe Reagan was willing to give the liberals two if he got one - Scalia.

I haven't researched his commentary on this issue but I do remember that his administration was big on who would put the first woman in the USSC. It was a big deal with the libs and media too.

She might have been the best qualified of all the eligible females judges at the time. I presume that Goldwater supported her.
