I don't think you can overlook the fact that women were a force just by being home. Even if they were lying on the couch, they were still home, and thus a barrier to things like drug dealing in the home, sex, parties, underage drinking, binge eating by teens- things like that.

I certainly don't think every 50's mom was a "good" parent, but the sheer numbers of female eyes on the street during the day kept down truancy and crime. While your mother might have been crappy, someone else's mother would feel free to yell at you if you stepped out of line- because SOMEONE would usually catch you.

I really have thought this out. I really do prefer it the other way. I don't believe we will find a solution to the mess we're in. I suspect things will just get worse and worse. I don't see any way to reverse it, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't change things if I ruled the world.
