"I just tried (Sat PM) to place a short order through Schwab."

I can't believe you wrote that Chancels - I did exactly the same thing! And got the same response from the Schwab computer.

The premium is huge on the puts, 12.50 Feb puts at $1.60 - it's unheard of for there to be that much volatility premium until lately.

I think selling the calls is the way to go. Or sell a call spread, or buy deeper ITM puts as a "synthetic short".
If you were willing to short at $12.00 why not just buy the 22.50 puts for 10.60 and give the MM a little tip on the spread?

What happens when you write a call, get assigned, and there are no shares available to borrow? Do you just have to buy them in immediately?
