I forget whether there was any installation required, but it was painless. It's really worth your while, especially for someone of your interests. For example, you could trace the Oregon Trail on it and get a pretty good view of what the pioneers were actually seeing. It has a fantastic 3-D feature.

I've actually looked at trees I've camped under, and I can count the trees in my own yard.

You do need to install it.

Go to the main Google page and type in: install Google Earth

The top level link will lead you to the download.
