Brazil used to stop for Summer DEC 20. Then slowly start and only kick off real good after Carnival. Now with economy growing, an early Carnival shorts the stopover.

Wife explains why Carnaval comes early: Business people coming from abroad need country in action. All hotels booked foreigners want to do business (with Elroy's country dollars seeking Brazil :-) but locals not available, no hotels, wives and girlfriends susptitious of those foreigners coming to Brazil at a carnaval time. Not good for business. And we are open for bsuiness right now. Tourist business said: Hey! we want Brazilians with money, give them time to recover from Xmas an year end spending, thus late carnaval! But business also good for tourism if foreigners coming for tourism -running away from winter, could do a summer plus Carnaval at a single go if carnaval early. Therefore early Carnaval was made consensually. Besides, wives and girlfriends don;t know Carnaval is early so the boys can do a little escapade... Everybody is happy.. and Vive the Brazilian way of solving stick problems. Best diplomats in the world. Trust me.
