He did call for more troops in Iraq sooner than some, but later than others who made the same argument before the first shots were even fired. And McCain's support for Rumsfeld only evaporated over time, as it became painfully clear that the war in Iraq was going south.

I'm not sure McCains position will be that easy to defend against a democrat - especially Obama. Yes, he was slow to support additional troops, but winning the ground war has never been a problem in Iraq. The problem is winning the political war and the hearts and minds of the people. That part of the war I think we have lost and every soldier in the world won't change that. It will take a mind set change and I don't think McCain is capable of that.

I respect McCain for his service in Viet Nam, but how does that help him with wisdom in Iraq?
