From what I read the OLPC XO is designed for environments where the world's poorest children reside. It's waterproof, with an ultra-bright screen which can be used in full sunlight, and ultra-low power consumption. It has solar adapters and pull string electric generators for areas that don't have power readily available. I don't think the classmate was designed for that environment. The classmate seems to be better designed for more developed countries including US kids, China, India etc.
