It's that they were being two-faced by doing so while pretending to be a friend to the XO project.

Says you.

The other side says Egoponte first agreed they could continue to sell the Classmate, then changed his mind and threw a fit, and kicked them out, then begged them to rejoin.

Re: The problem is not with Intel trying to sell a competitor to the XO...

It's that they were being two-faced by doing so while pretending to be a friend to the XO project.

How does one "pretend" to be a friend, and still give $6M in funding and be the largest single contributor to the organization?

theinquirer.net

The fact is that Intel WAS a friend to the OLPC organization, AND they were willing to help improve the software and design the next generation platform. But Negroponte got greedy and demand that Intel ONLY focus on OLPC, and stop support on all other competing laptops. His GREED was the thing that forced Intel to exit the relationship with the organization.

I've seen people on this board claim that Intel did nothing to contribute to OLPC, and you seem to claim that plenty of underhandedness went on behind Negroponte's back.

These are either lies or claims made in ignorance.

If you read the article linked above, you'll see that Paul Otellini approached Nick Negroponte with a question, "Is your goal to get every kid a laptop, or to get every kid an OLPC laptop?" Otellini only agreed to work with Negroponte when Negroponte responded that he wanted every kid to get a laptop, meaning that he was agnostic to the type of laptop the child would get.

So if anyone was being two-faced, it was Negroponte, by claiming he was agnostic, but in fact only interested in his own ego child. He forced Intel out of the relationship when he "changed his mind", and demanded that Intel betray their customers and ditch the Classmate and Eee PC.

How unreal is that? What kind of a self-centered prick would Nick Negroponte need to be to place a company in a position where they have to choose whether to keep their promises to existing customers, or be placed in the spotlight for a scandal involving them leaving a non-profit organization for the benefit of 3rd world children?

I think Negroponte is a self-centered prick, and he wheeled and dealed Intel until he thought he had the leverage to convince them to go with him exclusively. And when Intel turned their back on his leverage, he makes a stink. Which means that Negroponte isn't just self-centered and a prick, but he's also a liar and a hypocrite.

Fortunately for intelligent people who invest in Intel it will be seen as good and fair competition.

It just makes me laugh that if this were reversed and it were Intel in the negroponte unit we would be hearing howling about Intel and it's monopoly. Seems as though AMD can't have it both ways. too bad for them.

I don't think Intel pretended to be a friend of the XO product, Intel tried 'working' with Negroponte and it was found to be that Intel and Negroponte couldn't.

It certainly lacks integrity on the OLPC team that is for sure.
