re: Negroponte didn't really care about just getting laptops in kids' hands. Only OLPC laptops would do.

You are correct. To properly facilitate learning and not just sell hardware, OLPC set out to determine specifications that would meet needs of a majority of the world's poor kids. Then they developed a reference design that met those specifications.

AMD did not design the XO laptop, it was a collaboration of thousands of individuals and dozens of companies.

Intel, OTOH, took an existing product that was designed for indoor use, which didn't meet these specifications, and tried to substitute it. Why didn't Intel instead propose a compatible motherboard with an Intel chip on it? That would have been useful. Trying to "sell laptops" was not.

It was the height of arrogance for Intel to ignore the specifications crafted by educators and technologists around the globe and attempt to sell something without key features like ad hoc networking, project collaboration and long battery life.
