I agree. The anxiety is akin to not knowing when and how much to tip only, of course, the dollars at stake are much greater and we're in a particularly nervous state from our illnesses.

So I very much appreciate your posting your anecdote, which gives us guidance on how much to offer. The solution to the "so what" is having someone to go to school off. Hopefully we will all share that experience if we ever run into someone faced with a big bill. It seems that my suggestion of 39% was on target.

I also appreciate your confirming that the uninsured don't have to PAY the amount BILLED.
