I'm considering moderate based on the size of the deficit compared to the size of the economy. If you also have other issues these moderate deficits can contribute to more than moderate problems (although I don't think the US economy is facing any problems I'd call very severe right now), but that wouldn't make the deficit itself more than moderate. Some of the possible projections for the deficit would move it from moderate to large. But large still isn't "mountainous" or "a disaster".
