I totally agree with you on this, Peter.

And, my guess is that it's NOT because 'our politicians are any more evil then the average world pol'... it's because of the way the SYSTEM is designed.

The way it WORKS.

There is no incentive for any politician to 'bite the bullet' in the short-term, to build for long-term stability and growth, to balance the government's books and keep them that way, to forgo current spending in favor of maintaining a lower tax base and more vigorous future growth.

No, the system is designed with only SHORT-TERM rewards to the politicians.

If they can't get reelected in the next two, or four, or six years... then it means nothing to them.

That is why I believe that we must CHANGE THE SYSTEM, and TIE the politicians HANDS (at least: as much as possible and prudent :-) in the area of requiring balanced budgets from them.

Glad that you agree that you agree with me that anything short of a constitutional amendment is likely to fall far short of solving the chronic deficit and over-spending problems....
