You wrote.

"The south is the most conservative part of the country, the bible belt and the most bigoted part of the country. They had to be forced to integrate and they still resist gay marriage as an abomination. Imagine how that makes gays feel! I am not gay, but I feel gay bashing is EXACTLY the same as blatant racism.

And I think the Republican party actually has making gay marriage unconstitutional as part of their party campaign? That is how primitive they are!!

So there is the equation."

I keep writing and saying that you are so right on but it's true.

My reply.

I love the NC mountains but the Baptists reign and they have
a big influence on politics.. Some even fly the Israeli flag because the Jews are to be part of that event the name of which escapes me... within a decade..

The people themselves are wonderful, friendly and caring but
underneath there are these prejudices that surface so that one avoids politics or religion.

There are so many things about the Republican Party that are not compatible to my way of thinking at all a significant one being this gay marriage amendment that they want to use to change the constitution. Imagine. Of all the important things in the world... that an amendment would help the Republican party stoops to one that divides our country and is prejudiced against a minority... Unbelievable to me.

I received message in my mailbox from Huckabee as an inducement to vote for him and in it was the gay amendment issue. I wrote back in the space provided that I never would vote for anyone who is promoting bias and using a group as a scapegoat to be popular. That is the problem . Instead of the candidates doing what they think is right and just they
adapt to the crap that a few religious leaders say is in Leviticus... They negate the rest of the Bible so that they have a standard for their hate... That is all it is.

Conservatives on the other hand are natural born bigots.

I'm not sure I've ever heard a more bigoted statement than that.

Nonsense, and as Lane3 pointed out bigoted as well.

The south is the most conservative part of the country, the bible belt and the most bigoted part of the country. They had to be forced to integrate

And those who resisted strongly where mostly Democrats, while the Republicans voted for the Civil Rights act in higher percentages nation wide than the Democrats did.

So did the north. During the summer of 1966, I watched my neighbors in Chicago throw stones at Martin Luther King Jr. during an open housing march. When it came to racial prejudice, one of the big differences during that period between the south and the north was that the south was more honest and open and about it.

"Conservatives on the other hand are natural born bigots."

I don't know what to say. I don't think any party has a predisposition to bigotry. I think we all have a tendency to be bigoted about what we don't like. Liberals can be very bigoted- they just choose to be bigoted against "business people" or "loggers" or people who disagree with them on gay rights (note I do not say they all are, just some are.)

It's also true that we might not recognize our own bigotry. Your statement, for example, is bigoted. It's no more bigoted than the statements we see about liberals on other threads, but it's certainly no better. And I think Dale is trying for better here.

The south is the most conservative part of the country, the bible belt and the most bigoted part of the country.

You may want to be careful with the generalizations.

I have lived in the South for 52 years and in that time have seen very little overt racism.

On the other hand, I was in Boston in the summer of '76 and was caught up in a racial fight bigger than any brawl I've ever seen; it covered several city blocks.

I was shocked to see such open racial hatred, having never seen anything like it.
