When someone tanks a large lead, they either did something actively that was wrong, or they failed to react to changed sentiments in the electorate and, as a result, they get left behind.

The idea of a president who takes responsibility more than blaming others somehow (or just denying there is a problem like Bush), has a lot of appeal.

For all their whining, the Republican conservatives should be glad McCain will represent their party this time around. He is one of the bigger anti-whiners in politics today.

We should also bear in mind that a lot of whining in politics is just more spin to get the press to focus in another direction when a candidate doesn't like the heat.
