Good point.

That gift would decline over time as hybrids tended to become the norm although it would still be a gift to a limited extent to the auto manufactures that make hybrids even if they all do, even if every model is a hybrid you are still providing a subsidy for cars.

Maybe the real gift would be to any company that sells batteries or hybrid related equipment to multiple car companies.

I drive a hybrid. The government took away any subsidy two years ago. I got tax break 2005 but the next year it was gone.

I paid a lot for the car but for me it is all psychological. I see the SUV next to me with a bill of over $ 70.00 and mine is $20.00 every two weeks... The car gets 47 mpg on average in
city driving. I LOVE IT.
