Well, I'm not going to get into a "Yes we did, no we didn't" discussion. We will have to agree to disagree about whether or not the US has lost credibility in the world due to the Bush admin and due to the invasion of Iraq. The slope of the line that tracks worldwide polling numbers on the US after 9.11, though, strongly suggests that the "Yes we did" side is far more correct than the "No we didn't" side. People can make up their own minds as to which side is in the "alternate universe," as you put it.

As for the Afghanistan business: "Its not like Afghanistan stopped because of Iraq." Well, it didn't "stop" altogether, but relative to the threat, it did. For the US, at any rate. The slippage there isn't an accident. And Afghanistan can't be seen in isolation from what is happening in Pakistan. There is a border between the two countries, but to the Pashtuns who live on both sides of the it, that border is pretty much irrelevant. I still maintain that we should have made sure that that area was secured before heading off onto other little adventures (if we ever did head off).

As for climate change--there has been so much misinformation bandied around about that that the issue can get far too complicated to discuss here. Your info on Europe is widely repeated and isn't total nonsense, but it only barely indicates the truth. There has been progress across the pond, it is slow and difficult, but there has been a great deal of experimentation and progress as well as inevitable dead ends and backstepping, but there has been progress. Yes, I've seen some of the stats that RWs have put out--as I'm sure you've heard, there are lies, damned lies and statistics.
