The exemption is up to $80k, they raised it from 70k to 80k gradually starting a few years ago. But they changed the law last year so that if you earn $100k, you get taxed at the $81k-$100k tax rate on your $20k above $80k the deduction. It used to be you got taxed at rates as if you only earned $20k. Some sneaky Congressdude just snuck that change into some bill with zero debate on the matter. Not really sure how that works in Congress, but I think it was in the process of combining the Senate and House versions of some bill that he just changed that law himself, and then everyone approved the united bill (or however they do that). There was zero debate on the subject. Bastid!

And not sure what you mean by your 2nd sentence.
