My wife is an Interior Design student in advanced classes. "Green" building technology and furnishings are exploding into the industry. It's going to be the big thing when home building resumes.

You are also right that Europe is way ahead of us. We may actually be the most backward country on the planet in this area, as most third world countries are way ahead of us. The only thing they use that I don't like is the tankless water heater. For one it is incredibly expensive and you might never recover that cost. If you are buying it because it is more efficient, think again. Buy a pilot-less heater and a roll of R30 insulation. Set it up right (don't burn your house down by putting insulation too close to the exhaust flue!) and you will have a setup that uses less NG than any tankless unit. You'll also have saved (way) over $400 on the initial cost. I have done this. 60 hot showers a month plus hot water for clothes/dish washing costs us $5 a month in Natural Gas. The unit almost never runs when someone is not drawing hot water.
