I find it hard to believe that 1/4 or 1/5 of people with cancer become financially destitute.

If you count in all the elderly whose cancer triggers a move to a nursing home they can't afford, it might be so. You could probably attribute most nursing home admissions to cancer if you wanted to. If an elderly person needs a nursing home and can't afford an extended stay, then Medicaid takes over. Somewhere on that Medicaid form it probably says "cancer." Ergo...
