Many people drain the financial assets of the elderly as part of a strategy to get Medicare / Medicaid to take over the costs of nursing homes. At $5,000 and up per month it is price shock for people who have never saved enough to afford that kind of expenditure.

Some people engage in fraudulent conveyance and others do it legally.

I watched my grandmother in law quickly expend her financial resources once she needed a nursing home. She had saved a limited amount and never invested it wisely so that it would grow.
