I've long thought that it would most likely take the country reaching some kind of crisis state, an economic nadir, before the public would light a fire under the asses of the politicians and demand (or take matters into their *own* hands through citizen's referendum and such) substantive and long-overdue STRUCTURAL reforms of our system of governance and budgeting... such as:

1) Comprehensive reform of the nation's tax codes (with resulting slashing of special interest loopholes and 'special tax preference items' and major lowering and simplification of nominal rates). and,

2) Constitutional amendment to eliminate the ability of central government to so very easily ALWAYS run federal budget deficits.

Absent the above two... and I fear we are merely 'kicking the can down the road'....
