Well since manufacturing is only a fraction of our gross production, my response would be - Of course but so what?

Calculating our GDP based only on manufactured products, is like me calculating the cost to own and run my car without factoring in my monthly payment.<<

Tim -

Of course I did not mean that you should calculate the entire GDP based only manufactured products. I only meant that products manufactured abroad should not be counted as part of our GDP.

Based on KyrosL's response to my post, which showed that he understood what I was actually saying, I would amend my statement to say that you can properly count things like Apple computers as part of our GDP if you subtract the foreign materials and manufacturing costs, and count only the value added by the American designers, marketers, retailers, etc.
