Simple solar hot water heaters are really easy to make if you live somewhere sunny. I saw one at the beach where all someone did was put a 10ft x 10ft plywood board pointed SE. On the board was flexible black tubing (maybe it was low tech black garden hose) laid out in a spiral starting in the center. The water inside that tubing would get hot enough to take a nice hot shower in the afternoon, at no cost to the owners. Works the same way solar pool heaters work that are made from pipe arrays.

The hot water heater is frequently the appliance with the highest energy use inside a house, after heat/air conditioning.
