I wonder what our readers think about this. Is it a good or a bad idea for McCain to link himself to Reagan? I know everyone wants McCain to talk about what I call his "maverick issues," meaning immigration, campaign finance, etc., but there's a big fight on the Hill today to rein in earmarks-- something McCain and Reagan both have fought bitterly. I'm expecting McCain to mention this to try get some CPAC love. Update: People are curious what time McCain is speaking. The word is 3pm. ________________________________________________________ Reader comments: MaineConservative writes: Thursday, February, 07, 2008 9:09 AM A Bridge Too Far Sorry, but I just think McCain has gone too far to get any conservatives back by making one speech. One speech isn't going to undo all of the many, many times he has grinned that Cheshire Cat grin of his as he's stuck his thumb in my eye. If that makes me a naysayer then so be it. I have lost all respect for the man, and my personal integrity will not allow for me to vote for Mr. McCain. I also won't vote for Hillary or Obama so I'll be seaching for a home, but getting in bed with McCain would make me too sick in the morning. I'm still climbing that hill with Mitt and have not turned back yet. It shows again, that McCain's "good?" years as a senator are in the past and in government he never led anything, but sporadic revolts against his own party. He needs to go sit on his veranda in Arizona in the future and rest on his laurels as a War Hero. Most military people understand the difference between leadership and management. Mr. McCain makes a big deal of the difference in describing why he believes he’s a better candidate than Mr. Romney. But there is a great difference between commanding -- as McCain commanded a Navy aircraft squadron -- and leading. McCain says that leaders have to inspire, which is partly right. But leaders also have to earn the trust and confidence of those he would lead. McCain has not done so, either among conservatives or among his fellow senators. That deficiency in McCain’s definition of leadership is best illustrated by the infamous MoveOn.org “Petraeus-Betray Us” ad that ran in the New York Times last September. It was a transparent libel of a great soldier by some liberal slime and published in a toxically-liberal newspaper that has profited from publishing our nation’s most closely held secrets. The libel impugned Gen. Petraeus’ honesty. It was important because troops follow military leaders who are trustworthy and truthful. If the grunts don’t trust you, they won’t follow you. And the same is true of voters.<
