Yes, and it came with Reagan's blessing. Reagan's people knew that they could CRUSH the economy and just blame it on Carter, THEN, when they were ready to start the 1984 campaign interest rates would be coming down again and they'd look like heroes. They ALSO knew that the average voter didn't "understand or care" about deficits so they could spend like drunken sailors and nobody'd complain. Reagan's irresponsible "borrow and spend" economic policies are the reason we went from a 1 trillion National Debt in 1980 to an 11 trillion National Debt today.
