The reason I say they didn't give in to British rule, is not only because they always had it, but because they wanted it.

Giving in implies you don't want it but have it pushed on you anyway, unless your talking about giving in to temptation (which isn't relevant here) where you do want it but realize there will be bad consequences, but then do it anyway.

That's a bit strong. There tax burdens where lower than what we have now. By not getting to vote but having to pay the tax they where perhaps second class citizens but not slaves.
