Lizzie,

Neither of these were in-house developments. Flickr was a Vancouver-based startup bought out by Yhoo in around 2005. del.icio.us was aslo purchased around that time.
Farzad Nazam, the CTO, left Yahoo last year or so. They tried to counter Google's advanced algorithms by hiring the founding engineer of Verity.
The problem with Yahoo is that since their bread and butter - the main Yahoo portal page - is not the goto page anymore, they are trying everything else, but without much success. They are now also trying to emulate Amazon's success in storage (SSS). They have their hands on too many things, and nothing much of substance has come of these projects.
I think Yang and company made a big mistake rejecting MSFT's bid (unless MSFT is stupid enough to shell out more).
One another thing is that Yahoo is 'supposedly' more valuable, according to the analysts, because Facebook is valued at around 15 billion. I am quite certain that in the coming years FB will be valued at much, much lower price. Google is pissed off with target ads in Myspace - it hasn't paid off.

one man's opinion.
