It's best to get a pup when the weather is mild...that way they want to go outside....training an indoor dog....a non sporting breed in the winter can cause problems with indoor accidents. Once these habits happen, they are hard to reverse.

If I've learned one other good thing it is not to train a dog to "fetch"....they can get to love it so much they only look to your children as throwing machines....develop exercises that involve your kids where the dog is at hand....even a tug of war is better than fetch.....you are training the mind early on and once programed these smarter dogs are a pain in the ass if you have taught them to play 24/7.

I read a few books when I got Levi and it helped to have an inside track to their behaviors. Always get the books for your breed.

and remember....

1 dog is good
2 dogs is better
3 dogs is stupid
4 dogs is 1st class insanity.

I have 4.
