Norway produces 10 times as much oil than what is consumed - I'd call that abundance, but USA is currently a net importer.

Anyway, I fully agree, that high tax is counter-productive seen from an economists point of view, but somehow, high-tax countries don't seem to become losers. As far as I understand, Ireland's tax level is on the rise, too.

In the long run, I don't think a high tax level is really bad, as long as companies aren't taxed too hard, money is spent where it makes society work better and the money isn't given it to voters. If a large part of a population receives their income from the government, it's suicidal.
