Actually the statement was those who try and defend their positions are dingbats. I'm just entering a note on my list of possible dingbats of the first order now :-)

As a scientist, in discussing science, he is most respected as he takes up positions useful to expand scientific debate.

However, he also meddled in politics, and things like funding is in the realm of politics. If you want to meddle in the politics of science, you don't retire into the employment of tobacco companies unless you think you can fool all of the people all of the time.

As you know, it's only some of the people some of the time.
