Sure. I think Bush Sr. helped with his own increase in taxes. However, during the Clinton years we had two key things that helped to ensure we had a surplus:
* increased taxes
* Paygo law, which ensured that any tax decreases or new spending had to come from spending cuts or tax increases elsewhere

We need to re-institute PayGo, which Bush Jr and the Congressional Republicans have refused to do, and we need to raise taxes on the top 1% of Americans. Do those two things and we can reverse this tide of deficits decisively. End the war in Iraq and we can save another $200B per year. Decrease total military spending back to where it was during the Clinton years and we can save another $200B. All of that combined and we will have a big surplus.

Look. We all need to start thinking like responsible and patriotic Americans. I know that it is popular nowadays to vilify anyone who says we need to increase taxes. But the reality is that his country cannot survive as a world power, if we go into bankruptcy. YOu and I can't live by spending more than we earn forever. So what makes the average American think our government can too?

When foreigners stop lending us money for our deficits, it will result in a Great Depression that will make the last one look tame. Unless we get fiscally responsible very quickly.
