While the banks suffer oput there: ITU net profit rose 58 percent and 96 percent in the fourth quarter and in 2007 respectively as it sold off assets and expanded credit operations.

Itau posted net profit of 2.03 billion reais ($1.13 billion) in the fourth quarter, up from 1.28 billion reais in the same period in 2006.

The bank said its quarterly results were helped by the sale of its stake in the local BM&F commodities exchange and in the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange (Bovespa), which contributed 241 million reais in gains to the balance sheet.

For all of 2007, Itau posted net income of 8.47 billion reais, up from earnings of 4.31 billion reais in 2006.

Itau said in a statement to the market regulator CVM that its loan operations, which have expanded to 127 billion reais, up nearly 36 percent from 93 billion reais in 2006, contributed significantly to its earnings.

Annual net earnings per share rose to 3.53 reais from 1.89 reais over 2006. Local shares of the bank closed trade on Monday at 37.32 reais. (Reporting by Reese Ewing and Alberto Alerigi; editing by Sue Thomas)
