Applied Materials beats by $0.03, beats on revs (AMAT) 18.07 -0.36 : Reports Q1 (Jan) earnings of $0.23 per share, excluding non-recurring items

The problem is, non-recurring items recur virtually every year with AMAT. In fact, they even put them above the "Income From Operations" line on their 10-k (which they should, given their regularity). After hours action seems to support the "beat" theory, we'll see what happens once the analysts start commenting.

Regardless, it's a fool's game to pay attention to the quarter to quarter hiccups for this company at any time - but that's especially true now. The key to the stock price right now is their future prospects in the solar business, and if you expect to shed any light on that by spending even a second thinking about whether the $.19 or $.23 number is the "right" one, well, all I can say is good luck.
