To me, he's saying that if he doesn't buy financials, he ends up holding retail. That's not sound thinking. I know how he got there, and I'm guilty of it as well thanks to my hedging strategies. But it is NOT actually necessary to be long retail if you avoid financials. You can select *just* semiconductors, or just software, or just energy. There's no need to hold retail stocks.

I'm in the same boat, since I'm short a bunch of stuff and hedge with index ETFs. I try to select index hedges that avoid as much exposure to financials and retail as I can, but they're in there.

I'm temporarily overexposed to tech in my long hedges, but I don't expect to be there for more than a few more days. Then it'll be back to Russell 2000 hedge.
