I'm going to say you experienced I think of as a "barnyard" nose. I usually experience it with Rhone wines. A little time in a carafe after opening does wonders for these wines.

Get used to the screw caps, they are expanding their reach each season. No need for a good cork on a wine that is going to be drunk within a year, as most are. MP

Sounds like it might have a bit of brett ... probably more than you are used to, so you are getting it in the nose, even though it often does nice earthy things to the wine unless it gets excessive. As noted, characteristic of a number of Rhone and Languedoc wines in particular.
