Interesting. I remember from the asian crises, notably Hongkong and Japan that those goverments invested large amounts into stocks to stave off a market meltdown. Particularly in Japan those efforts were really costly.

Buying assets with what (additional debt, or taxpayers money), is pretty close to "re-nationalising" companies. Is that what we really want?

I am shocked. For decades the prayer went out on how bad state owned equity is. Alas.
