Where, exactly, do you get your information about the work ethic of college professors? It sounds a little bit like you are getting your ideas from a right wing blog- which is fine- but it's unlikely to be realistic, nor is it related to the "crazy" idea of Obama's to reduce the cost of college. What is the logical connection between reducing the cost of college and the work ethic of professors leftist or otherwise? And why is reducing the cost of college for students "crazy"? I think I remember Bush talking about reducing the cost of college too- and I don't recall him discussing the work ethics of leftist elites when he suggested it :-) The bias against intellectuals in colleges is rather silly. It's true that educated people tend to lean left, especially in universities, but if you look at statistics, the more educated people get, the more likely they are to be liberal- that's why we call reading widely in many disciplines a "liberal" education. You can avoid the taint of relativism and cultural awareness by sticking to a very small subject area, or the sciences, and going a mile deep, instead of a mile wide, but there's nothing wrong with being elite. Elite is actually a good thing. We won't "like" all elites- but being highly intellectual and educated isn't something we should probably treat as an ethical "problem". At least not imo. Just as I don't think being narrowly focused and having no interest in the humanities is an ethical "problem". It's just a way of being. Nothing wrong with reducing CO2 emissions. It's probably a good idea, and I wonder if it won't lead to innovation. I'm with you on nuclear power, as long as the waste issue is taken care of. I hardly think it's crazy to suggest we work on that. And gasoline? I'm not sure why beating up on a company is crazy. What you mean here is that demagoguery is involved- but that's shrewed, rather than crazy. Many people don't like big companies- so they're a pretty safe target. Maybe you can come up with something "crazy" later on- or maybe you used the wrong word?
