WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush, who is due to kick off his African tour later this week, pledged here on Thursday that the United States will be a partner with Africa.

Speaking at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Bush said Africa is a place where democracy is advancing, economies are growing and leaders are meeting challenges with purpose and determination.

Bush said he would demonstrate through his visit to African countries how compassionate Americans have been in providing money to fight AIDS and other deadly diseases.

Bush will visit Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana and Liberia from Feb. 15-21 for talks on economic development and fighting against HIV/AIDS and other diseases, according to a statement by the White House.
