My impression was that the 4m couple exemption (I lost track of the levels) is actually a 2m exemption. Tax advisers informed my wife and I sometime back, when the exemptions were at 1 and 2m, that the single exemption was the only effective one. One member of the couple always died before the other and the remaining live member only retained the single exemption.

There were more than a few jokes about what happened if the couple died together in a car wreck or plane crash.
