You have trouble understanding how a conservatives arrest might make him wish he gets a liberal judge? He might want a judge that was "soft on crime", or one that was scrupulus about procedures used by the police and prosecution, either of which might be called "a liberal judge". That doesn't necessarily mean he would want all judges to be liberal, or that he would generally be liberal. He might become a libertarian wanting to get government off people's backs in general. In which case he would not support most of the liberal agenda.
