Cold comfort, indeed. People vote for their own representatives, not Congress as a whole.

It's really hard for an incumbent party to retain the presidency after eight years of an unpopular president. McCain might win by positioning himself as an agent of "moderate change", in comparison to Obama's "extreme change". But this argues for a running mate and advisors who are not too closely identified with the current administration. It's a tough balancing act. You have to keep the base massaged, without rubbing independents the wrong way.
